“I’m Okay” Even When You’re Not
“Hey, how are you?”
“I’m good.”
It’s a simple conversation.
One we’ve all had countless times.
But for many international students,
those two words, “I’m good” don’t always tell the full story.
Because behind that response, there’s often a quiet reality:
Missing home…
Feeling alone in a room full of people…
Smiling outside, but carrying pressure inside…
When you move abroad, everyone sees the highlight:
You’re studying overseas.
Building a future.
Chasing opportunities.
But what they don’t always see is the silent struggle.
The nights when homesickness hits unexpectedly.
The moments when you wish someone truly understood what you’re going through.
The pressure to stay strong, because you’ve come too far to feel weak.
So you keep going.
You show up to class.
You go to work.
You respond with “I’m good.”
Even when, deep down, you’re not.
And here’s the part that matters:
You’re not the only one who feels this way.
So many students around you are carrying similar emotions, they’re just not saying it out loud. Because somewhere along the journey, we start believing that:
“I have to handle this on my own.”
“I shouldn’t feel this way.”
“Others seem to be doing fine.”
But strength is not about pretending everything is okay.
Real strength is about acknowledging how you feel, without shame.
It’s about giving yourself permission to say:
“This is hard and that’s okay.”
Because when you do that, something shifts.
You become more honest with yourself.
More open to connection.
More willing to seek support.
And slowly, that silence begins to break.
Always remember, you don’t have to carry everything on your own.
It’s okay to miss home.
It’s okay to feel lost sometimes.
It’s okay to not have it all perfect.
What matters is that you don’t stay there alone.
Because the moment you open up, even a little, you create space for connection, understanding, and healing.
Time to Reflect: What is one thing you’ve been holding in that you might feel ready to express, even if it’s just to yourself?
And, you don’t have to walk this journey alone.
